Chinese New Year Lion Dance

We have been immersing ourselves globally into the culture of China to learn all about how their Chinese New Year Celebrations are different/similar to our New Year Celebrations!  We loved reading books and watching video clips on Discovery Streaming about Chinese culture and their 15 days of celebration!  However, our favorite part of learning about their celebrations was being able to witness the Chinese Lion Dance preformed by Chinese Dragon Dancers in our very own hallway!
Getting excited while waiting for the Dragon Parade

 Here it comes!!!

Mr. Butler helping out with the drum beat during the Parade!

 Such beautiful and bright colors!

Thank you so much, Mr. Butler for helping set up this great experience for our students!  Some important key details we learned this week about the Chinese New Year are:  Red is the color of good luck, oranges are the fruit meaning good luck, flowers are a sign of happiness, and The New Year is celebrated by receiving new clothes made of beautiful red or gold silk fabric while eating yummy meals of long noodles and sweet treats!
We were also lucky enough to enjoy a brief concert by the local Asheville based group, "Notes From the Soul" who introduced us to different types of music through out the different "ages" of the art of music!  It was a great treat to see local young students from Asheville educating our kids about different types of music education!

Happy Valentine's Day!

I hope everyone is having a wonderful Valentine's Day weekend!  We had a lot of fun last week integrating Valentine's Day and Candy Hearts in to our school work!
On Thursday we sorted and graphed Candy Hearts!  I loved watching how much fun my little Valentines had sorting/counting and then comparing their box of candy hearts to their friends!

 Our Class Graph
Recording their sweet and sugary data!
Then, Friday afternoon we had a wonderful Valentine's Day Celebration with the help of Lydia and Sam's Moms! Thank you so much for planning such a fun afternoon for us!
Everyone had a great time putting together their Love Bugs craft!
Henry was very excited to share his Love Bug with his Family!
Wishing everyone a very happy and warm Valentine's Day filled with love and family!
Thank you so much for sharing each of your little loves/Valentines with me every single day!  I feel so lucky to have such an amazing class!

The 100th Day of School!!!

We had an awesome day yesterday celebrating the 100th Day of School!

The students LOVED walking through our door that I decorated to celebrate such a special day!!!  It was packed full with activities like drawling what they think they will look like when then are 100, writing about what they would buy if they had $100 dollars, writing about what their favorite thing has been over the past 100 days, playing games with the number 100, counting 100 fish, and reading books about 100 things!  Two of our favorite books from yesterday were:
"100th Day Worries" by Margery Cuyler
and "100 Snowmen" by Jen Arena.
Here are a couple of examples of what my sweet little Angels think they will look like when they are 100 years old!

I love how they included walking canes and gray hair!!!

Here are the 100 colored fish we counted along with the recording sheet!  It was really neat to watch them figure out that there were going to be 10 of each colored fish!
Everyone worked very hard making their 100th Day of School Hats!
I think Edie might have Investment Planning in her future because she said she would use her $100 to get more money and buy art!  Smart girl!
Then we ended the day writing about what our favorite thing about the first 100 days of school was.  It was really great to watch the students reflect on everything we have done since August to pick something that they really loved about the first 100 days of school!

We really had such a fun day!  I can hardly believe we only have 80 left together!  I know the next 80 will be just as exciting and fun as the past 100 have been!

Homework

Happy Monday, Everyone!  I hope everyone is staying warm on this cold February night!  Thank you so much to everyone for being very easy to contact about how your student was going home today for the unexpected early snow release!  I just wanted to remind everyone that our classes' weekly homework packs started today!  Usually the whole pack (all 4 sheets) would be due on Friday, but since we have an early release day on Thursday and Workday on Friday, the pack is due Monday, Feb. 9th!  Please also continue reading with your students every night and recording it in their reading logs!  Thank you so much for all you do to help our students succeed, not only at school but when at home too!
