Have You Filled a Bucket Today?

Today we read "Have you Filled a Bucket Today," by Carol McCloud.  The book explains that we all carry an invisible bucket in which we keep our good thoughts and good feelings about ourselves. When our buckets are full, we are happy; when our buckets are empty, we are sad.  You fill a bucket when you show love to someone, when you smile, make someone feel special or do something kind. That’s being a bucket filler. A bucket filler is someone who says or does nice things to other people. Bucket fillers are those who help without being asked or give hugs and compliments. By filling other people's buckets, we fill our own bucket too!

Caterpillars and Apples

Today we read The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle!  After reading the book we did some sequencing activities and recapped everything the Hungry Caterpillar ate throughout the week!  The kids loved this book!

Today in math we used apples to help us work on graphing and counting.  We read Ten Red Apples by Pat Hutchins and also watched a short video of Dr. Seuss' Ten Apples Up On Top.
The students sampled one green apple and one red apple.  Then we graphed which color apple was their favorite!  They loved this activity.

Ken's Farm

I'm very excited to announce that our first field trip will be October 17th!  We will be going to Ken's Corn Maze where students will get to explore their way through the corn maze, play on the playgrounds, ride on a hayride, and also get to pick a pumpkin out of the patch!  The cost will be $12.00 per child, and if you're an adult planning on joining us, it will be $8.00 each.  You can just meet us at the corn maze that morning since adults are not allowed to ride on the buses with us!  Look in your student's purple take-home folders for more information on this exciting field trip!

Brown Bear, Brown Bear

Today's shared reading during our Read Aloud time was "Brown Bear, Brown Bear" by Bill Martin Jr!  We read the actual book then watched this great youtube video that helped the students join along when reading!
After watching the video and doing the Read Aloud together, the students got to make their very own books in which we all wrote the color words on the pages with the animals they matched!  They will keep these little books in their book boxes so they will have it as a choice during our Read-to-Self times.  I hope everyone is having a great week, I look forward to tomorrow night's Open House and Family Picnic night starting at 5:30!

Introducing...

I am so happy to introduce and welcome Miss Jones' 2013-2014 Kindergarten Class!  I am so excited to get to know and work with each and every single one of them, it's going to be an amazing year!
So far this week we have focused on two wonderful books, The Kissing Hand and Chrysanthemum!

We used The Kissing Hand to help the students understand it's okay to miss their parents and loved ones when they are at school.  The Mommy raccoon sends Chester, the little raccoon, to school with a kiss in the palm of his claw to rub on his face when he's feeling sad so she's always with him!

We used Chrysanthemum to talk about how many letters are in our names and what letters are in our names!  Chrysanthemum is about a little mouse with a very long name and at first she's embarrassed at school about how long and unique her name is, however once she finds out her Teacher is named after a flower, too she is much happier and loves her special name!  We graphed how many students names started with each letter of the alphabet, which introduced graphing to the students as well as going over letter names and counting!

We have also gone over the first 4 letters in the alphabet (A,B,C,D) and the Letterland characters that go along with them!  Ask your students about Annie Apple, Bouncy Ben, Clever Cat, and Dippy Duck!  We have had a lot of fun getting to know these characters and learn all about their adventures in Letterland!
