Reading Logs and Sight Words

We have started our nightly reading logs and sight words!!!  Every night I will be sending home a new book for you to read with your students and record on the reading log.  After 10 books, students receive a free pizza pass!!!  Please also make sure to review sight words every night!  These words are so important for students to know and to be able to recognize to build reading fluency!  Thank you so much for working at home with students on the work we do everyday in our classroom!
Also, don't forget that our field trip is TOMORROW!!!  We are so excited and I can't wait to share pictures with you from our big day!

Red Apples, Green Apples, We Love Apples!!!

We have been having so much fun using apples in our lessons this week!
After learning the different parts of an apple we had a taste-testing on Thursday!  Students had both a red and green apple then decided which color apple was their favorite!  They could choose Red, Green, or Both!  Then, we made a class graph to see which color had the most, and least!
Most of our students liked Red Apples the best! After Making a class graph we made our own graphs!  They turned out great!
Students working hard on their own class graphs!

Then, finally for writing on Thursday we used the sight words "I" and "like" to write about what was their favorite color apple.  Students wrote "I like apples."  Then after writing their sentence they colored the apple they drew in their science journal the color that was their favorite!  They did an excellent job with this!

Next week we are going to talk about Pumpkins!  By the time we head out to Sky Top Apple Orchard we will be little experts on everything there is to know about Apples and Pumpkins!!!
I hope everyone has an awesome weekend!!!  Happy Friday!

International Dot Day and Apples

Monday, Sept. 15th was International Dot Day!  Our media coordinator, Mrs. Allbach, helped us with an awesome lesson that integrated Literacy, Art, and Technology!  She read a book called, "The Dot" by Peter H. Reynolds.
After reading the book, the students decorated their own dots with colored pencils!
Then using an Ipad App called colAR the students made their dots come alive!  It was so neat to see their 2D pictures come to life in 3D swirling spheres on the Ipad!  They looked like beautiful balls of color spinning around and around!

 How cool!?!

Everyone LOVED this lesson and had a blast making their Dots move!

We are so thankful to Mrs. Allbach for helping us with this lesson and letting us use our library's Ipads!
This week we started learning all about Apples.  We have been integrating them in to lots of our lessons.  In science we are learning about what a Scientist is and what they do.  We talked about how they make observations and record their observations in their science journals.
Tuesday we enjoyed a yummy apple snack and then used them as part of our Science lesson.  We observed what our apples looked like, even using magnifying glasses to look closely at the different colors and patterns on the skin of the apples.
After making our observations and recording (drawling) what we observed in our science journals, my little Scientist enjoyed a sweet and healthy treat!

Everyone loved being Scientist for the day!

 Awesome observations!
Today we learned even more about apples including labeling the parts of an apple!  Tomorrow we plan on taste testing red and green apples then graphing which color apple is our favorite!  Keep an eye out for more apple post this week!  We have been having a great time preparing for our Field Trip by learning all about apples!

My name is...

Happy Wednesday, Everyone!  We have really been working on writing our names and what letters are in our names this week!  We did a neat activity where I wrote their names on black paper with a white crayon and then they put stickers on their names.  They turned out so great!  We are sending them home today!

Writing their names is a really important skill for our Kindergarteners!  If your student is still having trouble, please continue to work with them at home!  Also, please work with your students on tying their shoe strings!!!  Thank you so much and I hope everyone has a fantastic week!
